MEDICINE & CONSENT FORM – CHILDREN
The Nursery has revised the “Medicine & Consent Form – Children”, which sets out both parent’s and staff’s responsibilities in relation to administering medicines to children whilst at Nursery. We are endeavouring to set a clear framework within which the Nursery and the families of our children are able to work together to develop policies to ensure that children requiring medicines whilst at Nursery receive the support they need.
Parents will be asked to confirm that they have read/undertood and agree to the revised “Medicine & Consent Form – Children” (August 2016), as per link below, also hard copies will also be available to read in Nursery.

Mission:
Eagley School House Nursery endeavours to set a clear framework within which the Nursery and the families of our children are able to work together to develop policies to ensure that children requiring medicines receive the support they need. A clear policy understood and accepted by staff, parents and children provides a sound basis for ensuring that children with medical needs receive proper care and support whilst in our setting.
Eagley School House Nurseries regularly review their current policies and procedures involving children with medical needs in order to make sure that everyone, including parents, is clear about their respective roles:
Parent responsibilities:
Parents have the prime responsibility for their child’s health and should provide the Nursery with full information about their child’s medical need or condition. (P13 Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Years settings DfES 2005
At Eagley School House Nurseries we rely on parents to keep us informed about any medical condition or treatment that your child receives. Any treatment needing to be undertaken, during a session at Nursery (whether regularly or in the event of an emergency) should be discussed with the setting and the child’s key worker. A medical pack must be completed and if medication needs to be administered a parental consent form must be signed.
Eagley School House Nurseries responsibilities:
There is no legal duty that requires school or setting staff to administer medicines (P7 Managing Medicines in Schools and Early Years settings DfES 2005). Staff are trained as Early Years Educators and not as medical nurses, however, the Nursery aims to work in partnership with parents in helping to provide a manageable and safe procedure in relation to the administration of medications whilst your child is at Nursery.

In relation to exclusion protocols, the Nursery adheres to the above guidelines.
Confidentiality
Eagley School House Nursery respects the child’s right for confidentiality and information will be shared with the relevant staff members after discussion with parents about who needs to be informed.
Administration of Medication
Medication will only be administered if it is essential (i.e. ‘that it would be detrimental to the child’s health if the medicine were not administered during the setting day’). Where ever possible, dosages of medicine must be worked out so that they can be taken outside Nursery sessions.
Eagley School House Nurseries want to work with our parents, therefore if your child is prescribed medication we request you keep your child away from Nursery for a period of 24 hours. This exclusion period ensures that should your child have an allergic reaction, they will not be at Nursery and it also gives the child’s medication some time to take effect. After this period, if your child remains on medication our policy is as follows:
Prescribed 4 doses a day Nursery staff will administer 2 doses of medicine – Parents can then administer medicine BEFORE the child attends Nursery, and again in the evening AFTER the child has left Nursery – which provides the required 4 doses per day.
Prescribed 3 doses a day Nursery staff will administer 1 dose of medicine – Parents can then administer medicine BEFORE the child attends Nursery, and again in the evening AFTER the child has left Nursery which provides the required 3 doses per day.
PLEASE NOTE: The personal circumstances in relation to your child’s illness can always be discussed confidentially with the Manager of the Nursery, and the above protocol does not affect our long term medicine policy.
